A Look Back at the Origins of the EHS Congress

A Look Back at the Origins of the EHS Congress

Did you know that EHS Congress was hosted 30 years ago in Paris?

This year, Paris proudly hosts the 47th edition of the European Hernia Society Congress, but the story of this event stretches far beyond its numbering.

In fact, its roots run deep into the history of surgical innovation in Europe, originating right here, in the very city where it all began.

In 1979, Paris witnessed the birth of a pioneering movement in abdominal wall surgery. At the Avicenne Hospital in Bobigny, a group of visionary surgeons, including Jean-Paul Chevrel, Jean Rives, and René Stoppa, convened to address the challenges in hernia surgery, a field then lacking recognition and standardisation.

This gathering led to the establishment of the Groupe de Recherche et d’Études sur la Paroi Abdominale (GREPA), a precursor to the European Hernia Society (EHS).

From these humble beginnings, GREPA evolved into a European-wide society, fostering collaboration and advancing surgical practices across borders. In 1998, GREPA was officially renamed the European Hernia Society (EHS-GREPA), and later simplified to EHS in 2021.

The inaugural EHS Congress, held in Paris, set the stage for a tradition of scientific exchange and innovation. Now, 30 years later, the EHS Congress returns to Paris, celebrating its rich history that continues to drive advancements and innovation in Hernia surgery.
